Myths about women over 50
1. We don't care about how we look
Simply not true! Yes, our culture is youth-obsessed, but we can be very attractive and fit in our 50's and 60's! While we care about our looks, most of us are past obsessing about them. We stay informed on fashion and beauty trends and are willing to put in a little extra time to look and feel our best. We know healthy always looks best.
2. Women over 50 are too old to fall in love again
I personally know women, ages 55 to 75, getting back into the dating arena--even remarrying. I remarried at age 59 and I'm here to tell you...it's the best! Yes, we're set in our ways, but, we also know the value of compromise. Here is the other plus--sex! Sex in your 50's and 60s can be better than ever. You've got more time and fewer distractions, and getting older often means you're more comfortable in your own skin.
3. Women over 50 are not employable
Age may slightly dim our employment prospects, but older women often have the financial ability to start up their own businesses — with the potential to embark upon a second career, doing something that they always wanted to do. Age discrimination does not exist when you are your own boss.
Businesses and services that are geared toward people in their 70s and 80s that can be done by people in their 50s and 60s are on the rise, according to AARP.
A perfect example is patient advocacy services for seniors who need assistance with health care-related issues, such as tackling billing mistakes or sorting out insurance coverage.
There’s also a need for home-modification professionals, fitness trainers for seniors and personal finance planners. There is also a huge demand for things as basic as bill-paying services.
4. Women over 50 should wear our hair short and grey
Just not true. There are many women over 50 (even over 60) that rock long hair--Christie Brinkley is a perfect example. But, how about the rest of us?
Many women decide to stop coloring their hair to save time and money. I think it's important to evaluate the "Why" we think grey is best. If it's a color you've truly always wanted and know you'll look and feel great in, then go for it! Just be sure to makeup and wardrobe color adjustments.
