Skincare Trend: Skin Flooding
Skin flooding is a trend on the rise, especially for women over 50. The idea behind the technique is to "flood" your skin in a particular order with different moisturizing products for longer-lasting hydration.
This trend isn't much different from what I've recommended to my clients for years. It's in the order of application that the difference lies.
Dry Skin: This treatment is for you!
Dehydrated skin can not only lose its luster, but also its bounce. Imagine a balloon full of water—it looks full and plump, right?. If you poke a small hole in that same balloon, water slowly seeps out and the balloon loses its fullness. This is what aging does. Adding moisture to dehydrated skin can help plump skin so it appears more full, giving it a more youthful look.
How to skin flood
As the name suggests, the trend involves “flooding” dry skin with moisture by layering damp skin with hydrating mists, serums and creams.
Skin flooding suggests the benefits of layering a serum with a humectant first-- Hyaluronic as the star, then following with a Niacinamide rich serum right after.
Why? The humectants draw the water in and niacinamide puts it to work flooding the skin with nutrients.
Best products for skin flooding
The skin flooding technique requires a cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer, but the star of this skin tsunami is serum.
The first serum requirement is hyaluronic (a humectant), like the one found in our Retinol Plus Infusion. It's a water-loving ingredient that helps to hydrate the skin deeply.
The second serum should contain niacinamide, found in our Platinum High Potency Vitamin C Serum,a multitasking ingredient that can help to improve the appearance of pores, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
Best technique
The technique works best by being applied to damp skin to minimize water loss for a fully moisturized complexion.
An alternate technique is to moisten the skin after cleansing with a spray type toner. Next up, a hyaluronic serum. Finish with a niacinamide rich serum, followed by moisturizer.
My skin flooding routine: Step by stepI change up my skincare routine 2-3 times a year. I find it to be the most beneficial for my skin. I use three of our serums, Luxe Perfect-aging serum, Platinum High Potency Vitamin C Serum, and Retinol Plus Infusion Serum.
The skin flooding difference is in the order in which I apply serums and making sure to keep my skin damp between applications.
Here is the order I apply products:
Morning routine:
1. Cleanse with Micellar Water - I use a generous amount and leave skin damp
2. Apply Retinol Plus Infusion
3. Apply Platinum High Potency Vitamin C
4. Apply Parasol SPF50 Day Moisturizer
5. Peptide Eye Gel
Nighttime routine:
1. Cleanse with Creme Fraiche Cleanser
2. Mist face and neck with Tonique Toner - while still very moist, apply...
3. Retinol Plus Infusion
4. Luxe Perfect Aging Serum
5. Ageless Eyes Revitalizing Serum
I apply each serum to damp skin to help them absorb better. I also make sure to wait a minute or two between applications to give each serum time to absorb.
If you’re over 50 and looking to boost moisture for a more hydrated look, Skin Flooding is a trend you may want to try.
