Women in particular are keenly aware that the aging process changes our skin. While beauty comes from within, a good skincare routine over 50 isn't just about beauty, it's about the health of our skin.
Now more than ever, women realize it's never too late to begin a good skincare routine--even over 50, 60, or 70.
I know it's tedious to constantly hear how important sunscreen is, but I wish I could tell my 16-year-old self about the brown spots, fine lines, and skin cancer that occur over 50 from sun exposure.
Find a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This means it blocks both UVA and UVB rays and offers the best protection. A day moisturizer with SPF30 is good, but SPF50 is better.
Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and the top of your hands, the two areas that are first to show your age.
Tinted sunscreens are very popular today. Many women like to apply tinted sunscreens and blend them with a sponge. The problem with this is most of the tinted sunscreen ends up in the sponge. Use your fingertips!
Nighttime is the most important time to care for your skin. If your morning skincare routine consists of a shower and sunscreen application, that's okay, but at night you must build on your routine.
In the evening, switch gears and apply regenerating ingredients, or what dermatologist Mona Gohara calls the "worker bees." She says, "At night is when your skin naturally regenerates itself. That's when you put [on] the actives, not the protectors."
So consider incorporating a retinoid formula that prompts cell turnover and aids in smoothing the surface at night."
One of the best and most popular ingredients in skincare for women over 50 is hyaluronic acid. While the name may sound a little scary (acid??), it's an absolutely fabulous perfect-aging ingredient that's a must in our skincare, especially if we have dry skin. Most of us over 50 do. Hyaluronic acid effectively plumps up the skin and helps the skin absorb and hold onto moisture.
If you have oily skin, consider yourself lucky, you may be slower to show signs of aging. Hyaluronic acid is your friend too, it keeps the oils balanced and in check.
Exfoliation is a must as we age. It gives the face an instant glow, both by clearing away the dead skin cells that cause dullness and by allowing our other perfect-aging products to penetrate the skin more effectively.
I exfoliate my skin 4 times a week because I see such a difference in my skin clarity. It also helps to keep whiteheads and blackheads away. I recommend my clients exfoliate at least 2-3 times a week.
Cleanse (most important time to cleanse is the evening)
Exfoliate 2-3 times a week
Apply a serum with Retinol and Hyaluronic acid
This is a basic routine. You can add a great eye gel during the day or eye cream at night. A face mask once a week is a perfect-aging addition too.
