Does skincare product layering matter? Are you doing it wrong?
I get a lot of questions asking if the order of skincare product layering really matters. The answer is, Yes, it does!
The whole idea is to give your skin the full benefits of each of the products you apply. So then how do you effectively order each of your products?
After cleansing, the golden rule to layering is lightest to heaviest.
Size Matters
Products that have a low viscosity also tend to have a smaller particle size, meaning they can penetrate deep into your skin. Finish with your heavier moisturizer to seal the deal and form a protective barrier.
Here's the problem
Surveys have found only 40% of women actually wash their face before going to bed (much less product layering!). I'm always amazed by this. Even if you haven't put makeup on during the day--pollution, sweat and cooking grime are sleeping with you. Ick!
Skincare product layering
Let's assume you're cleansing your skin. The next thing applied is a facial toner. Toners can be used on a cotton pad and then wiped over your entire face, ensuring pores are totally clean.
Our Tonique toner may also be used as a finishing spray - mist two sprays on the face and release a blast of powerful perfect aging AHA's (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) to the skin.
As we age, our natural ability to shed skin cells slows down, which can make dead, dry skin cells accumulate and cause our complexion to look dull.
Wrinkles, age spots, and acne are enhanced by not ridding ourselves of those nasty dry skin cells. AHA's exfoliate our skin, breaking down dead skin cells and the new skin revealed beneath is brighter and more radiant.
Serums are up next
Serumsare typically the star of skincare product layering and your skincare routine should not be without them. They deliver the hero ingredients you want absorbed into your skin. After applying, work serums into you skin in upward motions, then allow to serum to "rest" on the skin for a minute or two. I always tell my clients, use this time to brush your teeth.
Follow with any other target treatments. For example, we love the Parisian's Pure Indulgence Pro-Collagen Concentrate. It supports the collagen layer of your skin, keeping skin appearing firm and toned. Rosehip and Hibiscus make this a stand out performer.
Day/Night Moisturizers
Next, apply your moisturizer. Daytime moisturizers with SPF50 are best. At night, apply your favorite night creme. Hydrated and moisturized skin is essential to fighting wrinkles and blemishes. This includes oily skin types!
Last but not least, pat your eye creme or gel around the delicate eye area, using your ring finger.
Surveys suggest that a good skincare regimen, including product layering, along with a healthy lifestyle are the best ways to slow the signs of aging.
