How To Treat Maskne

What is Maskne and how to treat?

You've been diligently wearing your face mask, right?  Now, out of the blue, you're experiencing breakouts in strange new places on your face.

You're likely dealing with Maskne (think acne)-- clogged pores, and breakouts caused from long periods of wearing face masks that happen at any age.

Maskne can show up as pimples, redness, or irritation around your mouth, cheeks, and jawline.

Constant friction against your face, as well as trapped breath and moisture, can create or exacerbate existing skin problems. Bacteria can build up on masks, especially during the summer.

It's a good idea to stay away from polyester and nylon masks as these fabrics cause you to sweat more. Opt for breathable cotton masks instead.

What Dermatologists say about Maskne

Dermatologist, Dr. Abigail Waldman reports, "The best way to prevent maskne, is to keep your mask clean and by throwing away your disposable masks once they begin to look dirty. Reusable masks should be washed every day, preferably in sensitive skin detergent.

Your mask can press on the skin and actually occlude (clog) the hair follicles causing a breakout. Also, you can get a buildup of makeup and other allergens coming from the outside, on the inside of the mask, causing sensitivities, redness, and irritation."

The best way to prevent and treat Maskne

Dr Walman recommends washing your face before and after wearing a mask with a gentle facial cleanser and then moisturizer.

If hormonal type acne is a problem, consider a facial cleanser with activated coconut charcoal. Coconut is a step above regular activated charcoal and is considered more pure, effective, and safe. It pulls out toxins and impurities from the skin easily and helps our skin to have a soft, clean, and clarified appearance.
