10 Wives’ Tales That Actually Work (And the Science Why)

I always get a good chuckle when I see 'Old Wives' Tales' re-branded as modern 'life hacks.' Let's be honest—Grandma was the original hacker! Here are a few of those 'hacky' old wives' tales that actually stand the test of time (and a few that don't).

Recently, I was chatting with a friend about those frustrating foot and leg muscle cramps that always seem to strike in the middle of the night. She handed me a bar of soap and said, "Just trust me—put this under your sheets tonight." I’ll admit, I chuckled as I tucked it under the covers, but I was willing to try anything!

Well, the joke was on me. In the month I’ve been 'cozying up' with my bar of Dove soap, I’ve only had a cramp once!

This led me on a search for other Wives Tales...that work! And well...some that don't.

1. Gargle with Very Warm Salt Water for a Sore Throat: This is the "gold standard" of grandmotherly advice for a reason. When your throat is scratchy and inflamed, it’s usually because the tissues are swollen with excess fluid and bacteria. By gargling with warm salt water, you’re creating an osmotic effect. The salt draws the moisture out of those swollen tissues, reducing the pain and making the environment much less "friendly" for bacteria to thrive. It’s simple chemistry that works every time.

2. A Cold Spoon for Puffy Eyes:Before we had wonderful eye creams/gels, like our Peptide Eye Gel we had the silverware drawer. Popping a metal spoon in the freezer for five minutes and then gently pressing it to your under-eyes is a form of cryotherapy. The cold causes your blood vessels to constrict (vasoconstriction), which flushes out the fluid buildup that causes morning puffiness.

...And the Ones We Should Retire

Cucumber Slices for Puffy Eyes:While it may feel soothing, cold cucumbers do not work to reduce eye puffiness. They don't stay cold long enough to do much good.

If you want a real result, you’re better off using a serum with peptides and Gotu Kola like those in our Peptide Eye Gel .

Gotu Kola is known for its ability to improve lymphatic drainage. It helps the body’s natural waste-disposal system move stagnant fluid away from the eye area, addressing the root cause of the puffiness rather than just the surface symptom.

Another tale only: Perhaps you've heard that tomato juice is the cure for a skunked pet. Unfortunately, I can tell you that 'masking' a scent isn't the same as 'neutralizing' it. When our cat Rocky was sprayed, the tomato juice did nothing but create a 'skunky tomato soup' aroma. If you want to get rid of the odor, you have to use a chemical reaction to alter the scent molecules—vinegar or tomatoes just won't cut it!"

3. Ginger for an Upset Stomach: Whether it’s ginger ale or a bit of fresh root in tea, this isn't just a "comfort" thing. Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, compounds that actually speed up the rate at which your stomach empties and help calm the digestive tract. It’s as effective as many over-the-counter travel sickness meds!

4. Using Ripe Bananas to Ripen Avocados: When you place a banana and an avocado in a paper bag, the bag traps the ethylene gas. Instead of dissipating into the air of your kitchen, the gas stays concentrated around the avocado.

Viola, quickly ripened avocado! Be sure it's a paper bag, not plastic. We don't want to trap moisture and have our beautiful avocados rot!

5. Keep Brown Sugar Soft, Moist and Useable with Bread: Add a piece of bread to your brown sugar bag or container and your sugar will stay moist for up to a year! I do this all the time. The bread hardens and shrinks but the sugar stays perfectly useable. If you keep your brown sugar longer than a year, add a fresh piece of bread periodically.

I’m curious—do you have a "Wives' Tale" that you swear by? Or maybe one that failed you miserably (like poor Rocky's tomato bath)? Let me know—I’d love to hear your stories!
